The History of Glade Volunteer Fire Department
Since 1952, the Glade Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served the residents of Glade Township with dedication, courage, and community spirit. What began as a small gathering of local citizens grew into a department built on volunteerism, hard work, and a commitment to protecting neighbors in times of need.
The Beginning: 1952
On February 7, 1952, sixty local men gathered at the Cornplanter Gun Club on Cobham Park Road to discuss the need for a fire department within Glade Township. At the time, fire protection was provided by the Warren Borough Fire Department, which charged residents for service calls. Community members agreed there was a strong need for a local volunteer department and began organizing immediately.
By March of that year, members were visiting nearby fire departments to learn how to establish their own organization, including gathering examples of bylaws, training procedures, and equipment needs. On June 10, 1952, the Glade Volunteer Fire Department was officially incorporated.
Building a Department
In January 1953, the department purchased its very first fire engine — an American LaFrance carrying 700 gallons of water. Later that year, volunteers held a community work bee to pour the foundation for the first fire station at 14 Hohman Road. The station officially opened in 1954 and quickly became the heart of the department.
One of the station’s most recognizable features was “The Tower,” dedicated in August 1954. Originally used to dry fire hose, the tower also served as a lookout point during a time when communities remained alert for possible enemy aircraft during the Cold War era.
Growing With the Community
Throughout the decades, Glade VFD steadily expanded its equipment, services, and capabilities to meet the changing needs of the township. New engines, rescue vehicles, forestry trucks, and water rescue equipment were added as the department evolved from a small rural fire company into a modern emergency response organization.
In 1957, the department installed its first siren to alert firefighters of emergencies. That same siren still remains in use today as a weather warning siren for the community.
By the late 1980s and 1990s, Glade VFD had expanded into specialized rescue operations, including water rescue and technical rescue response. Members organized fundraising efforts to purchase rescue boats and equipment, eventually building a highly capable water rescue program serving the Allegheny Reservoir and surrounding waterways.
Advancing Technology & Training
As emergency services changed, so did Glade VFD. The department entered the digital age in 1991 with its first computer system for fire reporting and records management. Over time, members continued investing in advanced rescue technology, including side-scan sonar, underwater robotics, rapid intervention equipment, and specialized rescue trailers.
The department also focused heavily on firefighter training and safety. In 2008, Glade VFD became the first department in Warren County to receive recognition through Pennsylvania’s Firefighter Certification Program, highlighting the department’s commitment to professional standards and continued education.
A Tradition of Volunteer Service
For more than 70 years, the Glade Volunteer Fire Department has remained a community-driven organization powered by dedicated volunteers. From building stations by hand to securing grants for lifesaving equipment, generations of members have worked tirelessly to protect Glade Township and the surrounding area.
Today, Glade VFD continues to honor its history while preparing for the future — serving with pride, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the community.
